Depending upon roofing type and pitch, you may want to construct a scaffolding system as shown in order not to traumatize your roofing material.  This one sits on a high density neopreme tape and is notched to get over a vented ridge cap.  In raftered structures a core vent is required beneath the foot flashings to replace the displaced ridge vent through the skylight area.
